Google Launch New Web Browser –Google Chrome

Google Inc. is releasing its own web browser in a long-anticipated move aimed at countering the dominance of Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer and ensuring easy access to its market-leading search engine.

Google Chrome Review

Before i start, let me just say that the only browsers i use are firefox (THE Browser) and IE (just to check if the pages that i develop appear correctly and work). So, in advance, i’m sorry if i point some feature in google Chrome that already exists natively in other browser.

Yesterday i finally got access to Google Chrome Download Page, some time after the anouncement made on google’s official blog. The expectation was high and Google didn’t disappoint.
First, the installation is very quick. I went to http://www.google.com/chrome , Clicked the big blue button, downloaded a setup file, and chrome was installed in no time. Simple, quick, straight to the point.
First thing i noticed: The speed!!! The browser loads in a flash (not like firefox that, at least in my computer, takes a little time to load). When i started to browse some pages, i was astonished with the load speed.
Like google explained in the google chrome presentation comic book, chrome uses one process for each tab. This has several advantages. The ones that i best remember are:

• If a page crashes, only that page is closed, not the browser;

• When we don’t need a page, the process of that tab is closed and the memory allocated is released.

After this i decided to explore the developer suport that the browser offered. Well, i was amazed because chrome is only a beta and already has several features that are really useful. All of this without installing any plugin.
The dom inspector makes me remember Firebug. Can inspect every element and, at the same time, travel through the dom and see the styles aplied to each element. Yes, we already have this feature in firefox using firebug, but in chrome this feature is native, thats the beauty of it.

For javascript i found a console and a text mode debugger. I didn’t spent any time exploring them. Maybe one of this days i’ll take a few hours to explore this tools.

Finally two features that are really handy (at least for me):

• native language corrector (it has some bugs, but this is only a beta, i give a discount).

• element inspector in the right context menu.

Google Chrome surprised me. Fast, Simple, Lite. Can be both a browser for the common internet user, has it can be a browser for a developer. Google exceeded my expectations and proved, once more, to be a company that studies the market and knowns what the users want.
Chrome is going to be a first choice for now on. I’m official Chromed!!! I hope that future releases bring more and more new features to help improve even more this browser.

IS Your Website Does Not Rank Well In Google ?

Tips For Ranking Well For Specific Keywords

It has been my experience that it is easier to rank in 1) MSN / Windows Live, 2) Yahoo, and then 3) Google, in that order. Quite frankly, I have always ignored the role of Ask in the search market. While MSN is the easiest search engine to rank in, it only delivered 4.6% of my total search traffic in 2007.

I read a question in a forum, where the poster was asking how he could get his website to rank well in Google for the search term, "software".

The truth is that it is nearly impossible in nearly every search engine to rank well in the natural results for such a singular keyword as "software". In a nutshell, if you want to rank well in Google, you need to build inbound links (IBLs) to your website with your targeted keywords in the links.

But, you don't want to put all of your links together with one keyword phrase. One of Google's red flags is when they notice a link to a particular website appearing more than 60% of the time with one specific keyword phrase.

Utilizing a variety of long-tail keywords will actually serve you better in the search-engine ranking puzzle, in more ways than one. After all, when I do a search for software, I don't type in the search word, "software". I type in search phrases like: "accounting software", "small business accounting software", "windows software accounting small business", "windows image editing software", "windows software image editor", "windows xp photo album manager", etc.

People searching the keyword "software" have yet to figure out that they are looking for specific kinds of software. Once they do an initial search, they are going to type in more specific search terms to find what they actually want. So, once you start targeting a variety of long-tail keyword phrases, then you will start seeing more success in your search marketing efforts.

How To Start Your Search Engine Optimization Journey

If you are wanting to get into the natural search results of Google and the other search engines, you must know before you dive into the project that getting good rankings in the search engines for your chosen keywords can take a really long time, before you begin seeing results.

While inbound links to your website, targeted to your chosen keywords, will help your website climb in the search results of your favorite search engines, it may be a frustrating journey.

Your competitors want to rank well for the same search terms you do. And since only ten of you can be on page one of the search results, you may have to work really hard to topple those guys already on page one of the results, and you will have to fight to keep your ranking once you get it.

There are some keyword phrases that are nearly impossible to rank for, even if you have really deep pockets. For example, most every keyword phrase for the financial industry will be extremely difficult to rank for in Google. Competition in this industry is fierce, so achieving top search rankings will be tough to say the least.

This is the reason why so many SEO experts encourage marketers to target "low-hanging fruit". It may be fairly easy to rank well for a four- or five-word search phrase, and extremely expensive to target a two- or three-word search phrase.

The challenge most people face when they begin building links to a website is where to get those essential links.

Article marketing is my chosen method for getting inbound links.

Because of Google's news feed strategy, the initial placement of your article might appear immediately in the SERPs, but then it will disappear. During the news cycle phase of the Google algorithm, new materials are given an added boost in ranking. Once the news cycle is done, any new pages will sink back down to where they would be based on the general Google algorithm.

If you are honest with yourself, you know that every page on the Internet started life with a PageRank Zero, but given enough time, many pages will gain in PageRank, as they begin to be linked. Utilizing article marketing as a link building method, I have put one website on the map in as little as eight weeks, with only three articles. On the other hand, on my main website, I started looking at the keyword phrase "article marketing" just eighteen months ago, when my website sat at #79. Today, my website sits at #12 in Google for that keyword phrase.

I believe that given enough time, investment and commitment, I can use article marketing to elevate any web page on the Internet to multiple page-one listings in Google. But, not everyone is willing to make the kind of investment and commitment one needs to get to the top of Google's search results

What Google Thinks Of Your Site?

How Google views your site does matter if you want to succeed online because Google has become the dominant search engine on the web. It now has over 60% of the U.S. search engine market. In other countries around the world that percentage rises to 80% or more. In addition, the Google Brand Name has solidly permeated the popular psyche and any top rankings within Google will bring much weight and prestige along with all that traffic.

If you're a webmaster, you will already know how vital Google is to the success of your site, especially if you rely upon organic keyword rankings for your traffic. This free organic traffic from Google is highly desired by webmasters because it is extremely targeted and delivers high conversion rates.

In trying to reach the highest rankings possible, I (like most webmasters) have to be constantly aware of what Google thinks of my site and content. As a webmaster and marketer I have always geared my onlíne marketing towards Google. I have spent years building my keyword rankings within Google; if you take out the fact that it has nearly driven me insane, it has mostly been a positive experience.

This experience has also shown me it is indeed important for anyone to know how Google views and rates your site or content. The more knowledge you have, the better able you will be to tackle any obstacles and challenges that will come your way.

And like most webmasters, I try to find out as much about Google as is humanly possible, but Google doesn't give up its secrets easily. In fact, many webmasters would argue the only true opinion Google has of your site is shown in their SERPs - if your keywords/pages are ranked in the number one spots in Google's "Search Engine Results Pages" then Google must think your site or content deserves to be there.

However, there are other ways of finding out how Google is viewing your content. Below are several Google webmaster tools and things you can do to discover just how Google views your site or pages. They will give you a better picture of what Google thinks about your site.

Checking Your Content/Keywords In Google

One handy tool that will show you what Google thinks your pages consist of is located here:

Just type in your URL and tick off website content and you will get a listing of the major keywords Google has for your content. If your targeted keyword or keywords are not listed, then you have to do some re-writing.

Checking Your Backlinks In Google

If you want to find out how many backlinks your site has in Google, just open up Google Search and type in:

link:yourURL

and it will show you the number of backlinks you have.

Since Google doesn't give you all your existing backlinks, many webmasters also use Yahoo! to find a more exact number of links your site has on the web.

Just open Yahoo! and type in: linkdomain:yourURL

Now whether Google is using or considering all these backlinks is the big question? Finding the exact number of backlinks you have in Google has always been a problem because Google is not giving you the exact number or at least this is the general opinion of most SEO experts.

Another way I monitor my links in Google is to place quotation marks around my site name or my name "bizwaremagic" or "titus hoskins" and do a search in Google. This gives me the pages containing references to me or my site. This is usually 50,000 to 100,000 pages, I have also noticed my online income usually correlates as this number goes up or down.

Checking Your Indexed Pages In Google

Obviously, it is very important for you to know what content the search engines have indexed from your site. You can also check to see how your links are displayed and to see if any titles or descriptions are missing from your pages.

You can see how many of your pages are indexed in Google by using the site command.

Just type into Google Search:

site:yourURL

A little while back, having your pages indexed in Google's Supplemental Index caused webmasters much stress as it seemed Google was judging these pages as "second class" pages. Since then, Google no longer uses the Supplementary Label in grading pages but that doesn't mean a supplementary index doesn't exist; just that Google has promised to crawl and consider these pages as well in any search query.
Checking Your Google Cache

You can also check to see the Google Cache of your site by using the cache command. You will also discover when it was last retrieved.

Just type into Google Search:

Checking Your PageRank Within Google

Another tricky issue is PageRank. This is supposed to be the heart of Google's ranking system created by Larry Page and Sergey Brin; each link is considered a "vote" for your page and the higher the number of "votes" you have, the higher the PR your page receives. However, again Google is using "smoke and mirrors" to conceal your true PageRank mainly to cut out abuse and manipulation of their results. Some experts say PageRank still counts, other say it doesn't.

Globat x BlueHost x MarbleHost comparison
I have many websites and in past years I used 3 web hosts: Globat.com, BlueHost.com and MarbleHost.com. With all of them I was at least one year so I can compare them.

Globat.com
Globat was my first web host. They offered amazing disk space and because my first website was photo album I signed up for Globat. First three months there was no problem. But then my site was very often down. A few months later my site was down for 2 weeks. I contacted support 3 times by they was not answering so I switched to Bluehost.

BlueHost.com
BlueHost was a little better then Globat. If I needed support they answered in 24 hours. Good hosting for those who need PHP, MySQL and average uptime. The reason why I switched to MarbleHost after 3 years with BlueHost was very slow page loading - usually it took about 30 seconds to load a static page.

MarbleHost.com
I am over one year with MarbleHost and I am excited so far (I hope I will not need to switch again... who knows). There are no downtimes and my site loads very quickly. When I need to help support answers in 10 - 20 minutes. I signed up for their Enterprise plan which is not the cheapest but it seems it is worth it. If I will get any experience with another web host in the --future I will post it here.

You will get many backlinks to your website this way because all serious article directories allow to put one or two links to the "about the author" box. This will help your website to gain better rank in search engines. The second benefit of article directories is highly targeted traffic. If you are SEO consultant write an article with some SEO tips. If your readers will find these tips useful many of them will visit your link in "about the author" box.

2. If you wrote an excellent article put it on your own website. People are looking for quality information and they will find your article using search engines. Again, you will get highly targeted traffic.

3 way link exchange problem
In last months I got a lot of link exchange requests. Some of them was 3 way link exchange request. 3 way link exchange means that site A links to site B but site B doesn't link back to site A (like in regular link exchange) but to site C.

The reason why some webmasters do that is simple - google doesn't give to links gained by link exchange to much value.

If you want to make 3 way link exchange be very careful. I got many request when webmaster asked me for a link to his primary site (and very quality site) but offered link back from low quality site. 1. What are the most important elements of SEO?

ANS.It is generally a question of consistency. The main elements are to ensure that the key content on site is readable by a search engine spider (i.e. in HTML text format) and that all pages on site are linked in some way via HTML text links. If this is done then your site has a chance to compete in search results. Once this is achieved then it is generally just a case of tweaking the wording, using headings for emphasis and organizing content around specific themes.

It is also crucial to give regard to page titles and the specific descriptive snippet (meta description) that appears in search results. Having a bland or confusing listing in the results is as bad as not being there at all. The search results are the first point of sale for the business and should be treated that way.

2. How does the quality of a website impact on its search ranking?

ANS.In two ways. Firstly quality encourages links. People search for quality content, people book mark quality content and people link to quality content. Ultimately it will be the relative volume (and quality) of links to your site that search engines record (as compared to a competitor) that will determine the ranking.

Secondly Google does not treat all links equally. When calculating the all important page rank it compares the content of the site providing the link with that of the destination and weights accordingly. The more relevant the association between the content on the two sites the greater value the link will be given. Therefore the higher the “quality” of the referral site the more value that will be passed on. Also Google allocates page-ranking scores and these are also passed on via links. Therefore a site with “quality” page rank passes on more search listing value than one with a low score.


3. Should a SEO strategy take into account the differences between search engines and web directories? If so, how?

ANS.In theory you could optimize for all different flavours of search engine and directory. At times the differentiation between SE and directory can also be a little hazy. Yahoo for example is, strictly speaking, a directory not a SE. However it is much more like a SE in operation than a pay to play web directory like Yellow Pages etc. So whilst you could tailor your strategy down to a really granular level based on every different type of SE and directory in practice the most cost effective way is to target Google as this has the most stringent requirements and generally speaking if you can crack Google you will also do well in the others.

With regards to the true directories I generally encourage clients to run some paid search ads to judge what are the high performing keywords and what wording works best in terms of delivering customers to the site and then use this as the basis for directory listings and refining descriptions etc for free results. So in this regard the strategy should be inclusive across all listing mediums.


4. What are some of the most common website flaws in terms of SEO?

ANS.o Key content in unreadable formats. Ie. Images, flash movies, javascript etc
o Menu navigation that is unable to be followed by search engine spiders ie. that using flash, images, javascript without having an alternate means of accessing via text links or central site map
o Bland and undersold page titles and descriptions. Every page on a web site is an opportunity to target increasingly granular themes and keywords. Many sites use a universal approach to page titles and descriptions and try and make them suit everyone and everything but the result is that they are attractive to no one.
o Lack of thought in content wording. Web copywriting is different to that required for offline purposes as it must target not only humans but search engine cataloging systems. Therefore wording needs to be tight and reinforce content themes and trigger words that someone is likely to search for.
o Attempts to spam search engines. The best results come from tighly organized and worded pages built around relevant themes and linked via consistent means to other similar pages. Excessive repetition and use of link farms etc are often counter productive in the long term.

5. Is it better to submit a site to a search engine or let the search engine find it? Why?

ANS.As long as you are not doing it repeatedly there is really no harm in submitting your site to a search engine although this will not necessarily speed up the indexing process. The best way to get indexed is to work to get links to your site on other sites that have already been picked up in Google and have reasonable page ranks that provide relative assurance that they will be spidered again soon.

One of the things that I generally get my clients to do (if appropriate) when a new site is launched is to run a few Google Ad sense contextual ads on the site (at least for a little while). This will force Google to index the site so that it can serve appropriate contextual ads.

6. What sort of tactics constitute ‘SEO spam’ and what are the consequences?

ANS.The difference between good SEO and bad SEO is often simply a question of degree. A few highly optimized landing pages can provide great results in delivering searchers deep into the site and streamline this process for all concerned. Taken to the extreme this can turn into link farms with pages of links bouncing users and spiders around annoyingly. If you run foul of Google you can find your site black banned as happened temporarily to BMW Germany earlier in the year.

Generally speaking the following are things to be careful of…
o Link farming. Pages of links linking to each other and set up for the purposes of passing on search engine points rather than providing value to customers.
o Over optimizing through repetition. Just repeating the same keyword over and over provides little value. The key is to provide context not rubbish. Read it aloud if it sounds clumsy rewrite it.
o Invisible text. eg. white text on a white background so that the search engines pick it up but is invisible to naked eye. Search engines are smart enough to pick this up now.
o Using redirects or other forms of cloaking to serve different content to search engine spiders than to browsers.

If a website is properly search engine optimized, is it really necessary to pay for search results? Why/why not?

The organic search indexing system is often slow. It can take up to 3 months for any site changes to get picked up therefore paying to play is often the only way to legitimately get quick results. Also with search marketing it is really a case of page one or oblivion. If the keyword that you are targeting is very popular and competitive then it will take longer to get to the first page of the search results. Paid search is often the only way to get there in the short term.

SEO and SEM (Paid Search Engine Marketing) should really be considered complimentary strategies because they can feed off each other. Running PPC ads enables you to get great feedback on what customers are looking for and the most successful sales pitches that deliver them to your site. These can then be fed into your onsite SEO to refine it. The idea being that you run SEM up until you can get in the page one listings for free and then you can divert the spend elsewhere.



• What four search engines comprise 90%+ of all general (non site-specific) web search traffic?

ANS.The most correct answer would be Google, Yahoo!, MSN/Live and Ask, though AOL would also be acceptable (AOL, however, pulls its search results from Google and is thus more of a portal that includes Google's search engine than a true search engine itself).
• Explain the concept - "the long tail of search."

ANS.The long tail is an economic theory of demand. It posits that in the modern American economy, there are popular products and unpopular products in every sector and segment of demand and that, in any of those given sectors, a demand curve exists with a few popular products that have high demand and a great number of unpopular products that have a much smaller amount of demand per product. Long tail theory says that in any given demand curve, the "tail" or unpopular products, when combined, will have a greater amount of demand than the popular products at the "head.'

Here's how this applies to search:

The above graphic does a good job of visually explaining the concept - popular queries in the head have thousands of queries, while unpopular queries in the "long tail" are rarely searched for. However, that "long tail" is actually, when taken together, a far greater amount of demand than the few popular queries. This theory seems to be vindicated by statements like those from Udi Manber of Google suggesting that 25% of queries have "never been seen before."
• Name the three most important elements in the head section of an HTML document that are employed by search engines.

Title, Meta Description and Meta Robots are the big 3. Although Meta Robots isn't essential to have, it's certainly able to control spider and search activity. Meta keywords is another common answer, but it would rank as a distant 4th, as our experiments show that none of the major engines will rank a page for a keyword that is listed only in the meta keywords tag.
• How do search engines treat content inside an IFrame?

The engines all interpret content in an embedded IFrame as belonging to a separate document from the page displaying the IFrame content. Thus links and content inside IFrames refer to the page they come from, rather than the page they are placed on. For SEO, one of the biggest implications of this is that links inside an IFrame are interpreted as internal links (coming from the site the IFrame content is on) rather than external links (coming from the site embedding the IFrame).
• What resource and query can you use to determine which pages link to any page on SEOmoz.org and contain the words "monkey" and "turnip"?

Google's Matt Cutts has noted that pages and sites caught selling links for manipulative purposes may have their ability to pass PageRank (or other link juice weighting factors) removed.

Local link popularity refers to links from sites in a specific topical neighborhood (as identified by algorithms such as Teoma - now used by Ask.com), while global link popularity doesn't discriminate and counts all links from any site on the web.
• Why is Alexa an inaccurate way to estimate the traffic to a given website?

Because SEOmoz is 3X more trafficked than NPR...



Seriously, though, the underlying problem is that Alexa receives data from only those users who have the Alexa toolbar installed. As such, the sampling is massively skewed towards webmasters and technology buffs, who are more likely to use the toolbar than the population at large.
• Name four types of queries for which Google provides "instant answers" or "onebox results" ahead of the standard web results.

Flight searches, such as Seattle to Chicago; recipe searches such as chicken recipes; image searches such as those for Hopper paintings; stock quotes like GE stock quote and many more. Google lists them all on their features page. Of course, they neglected to mention our favorite (and I believe there a few more that aren't covered publicly).
• Describe why a flat site architecture is typically more advantageous for search engine rankings than a deep site architecture.

Flat architectures on websites allow spiders to crawl a large amount of pages without having to spider through many "clicks" or different pages to reach those links. A deep site architecture will force bots to crawl to many pages before being able to reach all of the content on a site. Flat site architecture provides three primary bonuses - first, search spiders are more likely to visit all of the content; second, the spiders are more likely to discover and index new content more quickly (as they don't have to visit as many pages to be exposed to new content); third, Page Rank and link juice is more effectively passed with fewer pages and more links rather than more pages with fewer links, helping to keep content ranking and out of the (now defunct) supplemental results.

Search Engine Optimizations

Introduction to seo
This document is intended for webmasters and site owners who want to investigate the issues of seo (search engine optimization) and promotion of their resources. It is mainly aimed at beginners, although I hope that experienced webmasters will also find something new and interesting here. There are many articles on seo on the Internet and this text is an attempt to gather some of this information into a single consistent document.

Information presented in this text can be divided into several parts:
- Clear-cut seo recommendations, practical guidelines.
- Theoretical information that we think any seo specialist should know.
- Seo tips, observations, recommendations from experience, other seo sources, etc.
1. General seo information
1.1 History of search engines
In the early days of Internet development, its users were a privileged minority and the amount of available information was relatively small. Access was mainly restricted to employees of various universities and laboratories who used it to access scientific information. In those days, the problem of finding information on the Internet was not nearly as critical as it is now.

Site directories were one of the first methods used to facilitate access to information resources on the network. Links to these resources were grouped by topic. Yahoo was the first project of this kind opened in April 1994. As the number of sites in the Yahoo directory inexorably increased, the developers of Yahoo made the directory searchable. Of course, it was not a search engine in its true form because searching was limited to those resources who’s listings were put into the directory. It did not actively seek out resources and the concept of seo was yet to arrive.

Such link directories have been used extensively in the past, but nowadays they have lost much of their popularity. The reason is simple – even modern directories with lots of resources only provide information on a tiny fraction of the Internet. For example, the largest directory on the network is currently DMOZ (or Open Directory Project). It contains information on about five million resources. Compare this with the Google search engine database containing more than eight billion documents.

The WebCrawler project started in 1994 and was the first full-featured search engine. The Lycos and AltaVista search engines appeared in 1995 and for many years Alta Vista was the major player in this field.

In 1997 Sergey Brin and Larry Page created Google as a research project at Stanford University. Google is now the most popular search engine in the world.

Currently, there are three leading international search engines – Google, Yahoo and MSN Search. They each have their own databases and search algorithms. Many other search engines use results originating from these three major search engines and the same seo expertise can be applied to all of them. For example, the AOL search engine (search.aol.com) uses the Google database while AltaVista, Lycos and AllTheWeb all use the Yahoo database.

1.2 Common search engine principles

To understand seo you need to be aware of the architecture of search engines. They all contain the following main components:

Spider - a browser-like program that downloads web pages.

Crawler – a program that automatically follows all of the links on each web page.

Indexer - a program that analyzes web pages downloaded by the spider and the crawler.

Database– storage for downloaded and processed pages.

Results engine – extracts search results from the database.

Web server – a server that is responsible for interaction between the user and other search engine components.

Specific implementations of search mechanisms may differ. For example, the Spider+Crawler+Indexer component group might be implemented as a single program that downloads web pages, analyzes them and then uses their links to find new resources. However, the components listed are inherent to all search engines and the seo principles are the same.

Spider. This program downloads web pages just like a web browser. The difference is that a browser displays the information presented on each page (text, graphics, etc.) while a spider does not have any visual components and works directly with the underlying HTML code of the page. You may already know that there is an option in standard web browsers to view source HTML code.

Crawler. This program finds all links on each page. Its task is to determine where the spider should go either by evaluating the links or according to a predefined list of addresses. The crawler follows these links and tries to find documents not already known to the search engine.

Indexer. This component parses each page and analyzes the various elements, such as text, headers, structural or stylistic features, special HTML tags, etc.

Database. This is the storage area for the data that the search engine downloads and analyzes. Sometimes it is called the index of the search engine.

Results Engine. The results engine ranks pages. It determines which pages best match a user's query and in what order the pages should be listed. This is done according to the ranking algorithms of the search engine. It follows that page rank is a valuable and interesting property and any seo specialist is most interested in it when trying to improve his site search results. In this article, we will discuss the seo factors that influence page rank in some detail.

Web server. The search engine web server usually contains a HTML page with an input field where the user can specify the search query he or she is interested in. The web server is also responsible for displaying search results to the user in the form of an HTML page.
